Student Leadership

Glen Waverley South Primary School has a range of programs that encourage student leadership. These programs include:

  • School Captains
  • House Captains
  • Junior School Councillors. Junior School Councillors have a signficant role. Class councillors are elected from all classes from Prep to Year 6. They have regular meetings and make recommendations to the School Council.
  • WorkSafe for Kids Club
  • Environmental Club
  • Captains for specialist areas – Library, Performing Arts, Visual Arts, LOTE
  • Classroom Programs that encourage the development of leadership skills e.g.: Competent Communicators

School Captains

School Captains are chosen to represent the student body in the following ways:

  • Commitment to the school through academic and cultural involvement.
  • Leadership.
  • A vision for their leadership.
  • Representing the student body at formal occasions both within and outside the school. such as Anzac Day commemorations.
  • Representing the School at official functions.
  • Addressing school assemblies to promote the values and good name of Glen Waverley South Primary school.
  • Speaking to the whole school about relevant matters.
  • Being an outstanding role model to all students within the school at all times.
  • Regular meetings with the Principal and Assistant Principal.
  • Be pro-active in playground issues.
  • Deliver welcome and thank you speeches to special visitors and guests.
  • Greet and welcome special visitors at the school gates, introduce themselves, show them to the office. And also conduct school tours.
  • Represent the students at discussions with the staff or parent groups.
  • Take a lead role in conducting the assemblies.
  • Assist in the presentation of awards at the assemblies.
  • Have an exceptional attendance and behaviour record.

House Captains

  • As a house captain students are expected to fulfil many different roles within the physical education and sport program.
  • House Captains are expected to always compete in house competitions to the best of their ability and set an example that others can follow.
  • House Captains will be expected to be able to encourage all other students to compete at the best of their ability.
  • Assist in organising, running and packing up each carnival.
  • Run a lunch time sports roster.
  • Assist in the organising, running and packing up after the twilight sports evening.
  • Read out the sports results at whole school assembly.
  • Help promote any sporting event or local sports club by putting up posters and by talking in assembly.
  • House Captains will be expected to give some of their own time during recess and lunch to meet these requirements.

Environment Captains

Environment Captains are expected to:

  • Attend and run Enviro Club meetings, both in and out of class time.
  • Assist with duties such as composting, looking after gardens and starting new Environmental projects/ideas.
  • Promote the environment and sustainability in your classroom and the school.
  • Read out announcements at assembly.
  • Assist with the maintaining of the ‘Enviro Club’ display board.

Visual Arts Captains

It is not always the best artist that becomes Visual Arts Captain, but the person who demonstrates an enthusiasm for Art, reliability, confidence, organization, helpfulness and an ability to communicate effectively with other students from different year levels. Visual Arts Captains are expected to:

  • Always do their best in Art and encourage others to try their best as well.
  • Assist with the running of Art Club which runs for half of lunchtime once a week. This role includes submitting ideas for and running art activities that students may like to participate in during art club time.
  • Promote tidiness in the art room, making sure every student works responsibly with the materials they use during class and art club time.
  • Read out art announcements at assembly.
  • Assist with the pinning up, mounting and organizing of art displays.

Performing Arts Captains

Performing Arts Captains do not have to be the best musician, dancer or performer at school, this role is for students who are enthusiastic about Performing Arts and would like to do more. This role requires students to be organised, reliable, confident, enthusiastic and helpful throughout the whole school particularly in Performing Arts.  Above all this position requires people who would be good role models to the rest of the school. A Performing Arts Captain is expected to fulfil many different roles such as:

  • Participate and encourage others in all aspects of Performing Arts. 
  • Set a good example that others can follow by being involved.
  • Assist in the organising, setting up and running of school events such as assembly, talent show, musical etc.
  • Help co-ordinate lunch time activities such as dance groups, drama groups etc and be a liaison between such groups and Ms Martin.
  • Assist in the organising, setting up and running of events such as Education Week open night concert etc.

LOTE Captains

LOTE Captains are not always the students who receive the highest marks in Japanese. They are students who are most organised, reliable, confident, enthusiastic and helpful. A LOTE captain, is expected to fulfil many different roles within the LOTE program such as:

  • Always do your best in Japanese and encourage others to try their best as well.
  • Run the Rainbow Hiragana extended learning class.
  • Promote the ‘Word of the Week’ in any way you can throughout the week and use the language at school.
  • Assist in displaying the ‘Word of the Week’ in every classroom on Mondays.
  • Read out the ‘Word of the Week’ at assembly.
