Behaviour Modification
Supporting Students
The aim of a behaviour management plan is to modify the student’s behaviour.
The Assertive Discipline Policy focuses on allowing students to make choices about their behaviour. Further strategies are required to enable students to make the correct choices. The Rethink Notices are a way of effecting a change in behaviour.
The value of the Rethink Notices
The Rethink Notice makes the student focus on:
- What happened? Retelling the events and reflecting on their behaviour.
- What were you thinking before and while you were doing what you did?
- What were you feeling?
- What were the consequences?
The following section then helps student to redirect their thoughts to a more helpful solution. (STOP, Think, DO see note below.)
- What other thinking could you have had?
- How would you have felt?
- What the consequences have been if you had thought and acted differently.
The student is shown that he/she has a choice and that behaviour is directed by his/her thinking.
